Recently life has continued to be challenging. My beloved is still in hospital, and they keep adding to the list of things in him that need fixing. Now, he is having a lovely time: reading, watching Netflix and eating apple crumble on an almost daily basis. He has had various tests and is kept busy by being weighed, having various things done to him and waiting for the tea trolley. I’m also busy as I continue to clear, sort and clean. I’m thinking of doing it as a business, but then I realised customers would have to be OK with me coming in at random times during the night, so I think that’s probably not going to happen. We don’t yet have a date for his surgery and so we are both thinking that it will be possibly another 6 weeks before he is home.

Some days I’m fine, others not so much. On the fine days I go to meetings, tidy things, do some exercise. On bad days I don’t. The other day I was having a not-so-good day and a friend rang me. Just checking in to see what was happening. She started by asking “What are you doing?” I said that I was trying to get my carcass off the couch and doing some sort of exercise.  Anyway, we chatted about things and when it came time to stop she said “So put the phone down and do some exercise and I’ll check to see you have when we speak next”.

This got me thinking. During my weight loss journey I’ve known people who have supported me and others who have not. The ones who have say nice things, ask how I’m doing and generally help me to continue. The ones who don’t say “Oh you’ve lost enough”, “Are you allowed that?” “Just have another (insert anything you like), when I have just told them I have had enough and really enjoyed what I’ve had. My method of dealing with the two types is, of course, different. The ones who are wanting me to succeed I smile at and thank them. The ones who try to undermine me? I mentally blow a raspberry at them! It may be childish, but it works for me. So, whatever you are trying to achieve surround yourself with the people who want you to achieve your goals. The others? Don’t let them undermine you because they feel threatened by your success.

So, when I put down the phone I did a class, then another, until I felt I had done enough for me.  That’s what friends are for.
